Detailed Description: Plane ahead of time as your acceptance into the program of study does not automatically guarantee your sponsorship from NCN. From the year 2008, HRDA will identify areas which are most critical to the econominc and workforce development and will determine the number of sponsorships available in these areas. This information will be available on the website from March, 2008.
Major: Once your application has been recieved, we will contact you within 6 weeks regarding the decision made on your application and/or if addional information is required to reach at a decision.
Minor: Incomplete applications will not be consisdered for approval. So make sure your application is complete and all the information requested is correct and accurate.

Aboriginal Community Wellness Diploma

Description: If you are employed as a social services worker within a First Nation/Aboriginal community and want to build on your knowledge base and develop skills to enhance your effectiveness, you will find that this academically rigorous program of studies has been developed in response to needs of communities such as yours.
Detailed Description: As a 60-credit hour (2 years) post secondary program, the Aboriginal Community Wellness (ACW) Diploma, formerly known as the First Nation Community Wellness Diploma, meets the criteria for sponsorship by First Nation Education Authorities. Arrangements can be made with communities or organizations interested in sponsoring a full offering of the Diploma program in their community or region. The ACW Diploma is holistic in its approach to learning and to health. Each of the courses incorporates knowledge of ‘western’ concepts and traditional philosophies and knowledge systems of Aboriginal people as they relate to mental health and wellness. The courses use adult education methodology as a link between health and wellness theory and practice and the real issues workers face daily in their role as a service worker. This program is a partnership initiative between Aboriginal Focus Programs, Extended Education, The University of Manitoba, and the Manitoba Community Wellness Working Group (MCWWG).

Degree credit recognition at other universities may also be possible. Students wishing to pursue a university degree should contact the Program Administrator to learn more about transfer credit options. Transfer of courses for degree credit generally requires a minimum B grade. Students wishing to transfer course credits to external organizations (e.g. CMA, CGA) should consult those organizations for their academic requirements
Minor: The pass mark for individual courses is 50% (D), but a C (60%) is required for some courses used as prerequisites. Upon completion of this certificate program, students achieving an overall GPA of 3.8 or higher, will be eligible to receive a certificate “with distinction

Emergency Medical Responder - EMR

Description: This 5 week full time program addresses the entry-level competencies identified in the Paramedic Association of Canada (PAC) National Occupational Competency Profile, Manitoba Emergency Health and the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) Competency Profile.
Detailed Description: The Emergency Medical Responder Program initiates the students in pre-hospital education required for becoming a paramedic. The EMR Program incorporates pre-hospital treatment for various medical and traumatic injuries as well as a methodical approach to patient care and scene assessment. The program also includes basic anatomy, EMR level treatment protocols as well as written and verbal communication skills. The EMR Program is required for continuing into the Primary Care Paramedic Program. Students receive entry-level training in the field of prehospital care. Topics include: emergency medical services, ambulance operations, patient assessment, basic life support, trauma and medical emergencies, pediatrics, childbirth, geriatrics, environmental, psychological and special situations. Students are required to attend classdays to achieve 64 hours of instruction in practical skills. Students will also be required to learn the theory self-taught modules which will require approximately 240 hours in total ( 20/30 hours per week). The class day include an orientation, skills practice and a final lab evaluation. During each class day, hands-on instruction will be provided so that you may learn the entry-level skills of an EMR.
